Britannica International School was founded in 1994 by a group of distinguished educationalists. After joining one of the UK’s leading international education providers, Orbital Education, in 2011, the school moved into an award-winning, custom-designed school building complex situated in a quiet green area in the Buda Hills, the prestigious residential area of District XII. Today the school caters for children from age 5 to 18 and operates full primary and secondary phases plus a sixth form. The enhanced educational programme is based on the English National Curriculum and caters for students from over 50 different nationalities.
Interview with Katalin Bodnár, Head of Admissions and Marketing
Upon entering the school, the visitor is immediately drawn in by the warm and friendly atmosphere. Can you please describe Britannica’s vision with regards to learning and teaching?
At Britannica, we challenge and nurture our students to become responsible, respectful and resolute global citizens. Within our caring and diverse international community, they evolve into independent and inquisitive lifelong learners, happily striving for excellence in everything they do.
Britannica International School is a community specifically designed for effective teaching and learning. We aim to build students’ self-esteem and a love of learning. The school provides a stimulating and supportive environment with opportunities for all students to achieve their potential whether intellectually, physically, morally or socially. We personalise and plan the curriculum, so that it is inclusive and fully differentiated.
What are the greatest strengths of Britannica’s educational program?
What sets Britannica apart from other schools is our nurturing and personalized learning environment where every student gets individual attention and can be challenged or supported be it academically, in the arts or on the sports pitch. We are proud of our high quality, fully-trained teachers from the UK, all of whom are specially selected for their experience and excellence. Even though overseas, we are able to offer a fully-immersive British learning experience for our students. They collaborate effectively together becoming increasingly independent so that they leave us with the skills to excel in the ever-evolving modern marketplace.
Who are the Orbital Education Group?
Orbital Education is the owner or operator of 10 international schools, located in some of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities across the world. Being a member means that the school benefits from the central services and support that the professional team in the UK provides. The head office, near Manchester, also delivers the quality and accountability that leads to success for our students, security for their families and progress for the company.
The European schools within the group have recently developed a cultural exchange programme. A group of students from Budapest will be traveling for a sailing trip in Mallorca. Spanish children will pay a historical visit to Hungary and a skiing trip is being organized in Slovenia with the cooperation of the British School in Ljubljana.
Can you tell Active8 readers about your fantastic community wall mural project?
‘Project Mural’ was initiated by a group of enthusiastic primary school teachers. More and more parents and students gradually got involved to make this wonderful creation a whole school community event. On the week of the painting, after months of planning, meetings and preparations every single child in Primary, plus parents, teachers, teaching assistants and friends donned their painting gear and wielded paint brushes, rollers and sponges to help the mural to take shape. Every single child and teacher in primary took part. The result is a cheerful and vibrant wall, a fitting representation of the caring, family community that personifies Britannica. We cannot wait to reveal our next project and promise that Active8 will be one of the first to know about it!
Does Britannica offer extra-curricular activities?
Yes, the school offers a wide variety of extra- curricular activities that aim to extend and enrich the learning experience for the children. Some are held by Active8 members like DramaWorks and Bat and Ball Cricket but we also offer creative arts, music and more. We try to cater for all ages, even the older ones, where the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, Model United Nation debating club and Innovative Lego Robot club are amongst the most popular.
Can you tell us about your annual Fayre?
There is a strong sense of community at Britannica and there are several events organized through the year where families are invited as well as the weekly assemblies. Our International Day is held in the Autumn Term. This is a celebration of our vibrant International community with foods and acts from all around the world on offer. ‘Brilliant Britannica’ is our Christmas Fair with a market and several musical concerts. Our biggest family gathering in the warmer months is our Spring Fayre. A whole day of fun with games and BBQ for the whole student body and their parents and friends.
Is there anything else you would like us to highlight about Britannica?
As part of the Orbital Education Group of Schools, Britannica is delighted to provide a fantastic opportunity for its students to attend one of two prestigious summer schools based at the City Football Academy, Manchester City’s world-class training facility. Each summer school will provide students not only the unique opportunity to experience the world class coaching and football facilities from one of the world’s top football clubs but also to meet and develop friendships with students from other Orbital schools and others across the globe. For Britannica students there is an added benefit of booking this summer school by means of a contribution to their tuition. Contact Britannica to find out more!
