There’s a new player in Budapest’s international school scene and they have started with a huge splash of success!
High quality UK national curriculum with a strong international flavour…
Perfectly located in the ever-popular, green and leafy 12th district, the Budapest British Interna- tional School (BBIS) is a modern, family-friendly school that has quickly established itself as one of our city’s leading educational institutions. BBIS provides a high quality UK national curriculum with a strong international flavour to their many thriv- ing students, and is a member of COBIS (Council of British International Schools). The school is deservedly growing fast and continues to expand both its facilities and its community, attracting the attentions of families both well-settled and new to town.
Extending students’ self belief and motivating them by challenge.
BBIS state that their aim is “to prepare every child to achieve more than they think they can.” This phi- losophy of stretching a child’s self-belief and con- fidence is achieved in many ways, with the under- lying method being to keep the child engaged and challenged, and thus motivated towards learning. LearningexperiencesatBBISencouragepupilsto be independent, confident, flexible and cooperative with others, as well as being especially con- scious of our multicultural society and respectful of one another. It follows that the curriculum has a holistic approach and gives equal value to develop- ing children’s academic, social, physical and global understanding.
A balanced curriculum creating balanced citizens.
Pupils spend approximately half of their curriculum time engaged in English, mathematical or scientific activities. The remainder of their schedule is com- pleted with history, geography, art, music, physical education, computing, PSHE and citizenship, and modern foreign languages. The school provides learning opportunities in as many as five languages (German, Spanish, Hungarian, English, and a Russian club), and there is also the opportunity for native Hungarian speakers to continue some learning in their native language. Every week students gets to spend a whole afternoon of fun sporting activity at the nearby MoM Sport complex!
Personalised education and care with small class- es and excellent teacher:student ratios.
BBIS has a maximum class size of 16 students, and provides two teachers for each class: one qualified, experienced teacher supported by a co-teacher. Teachers have an average of at least 5 years teaching experience and the overall teacher:student ratio is an incredible 1:4, ensuring that BBIS really means it when they say they provide personal and attentive education and care.
“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”
As with most successful organisations, BBIS’ secret is found in positive, proactive and committed leadership, reinforced by experience and strong knowledge of the area of service.”
BBIS Principal, Angela Fairs, has been leading educational teams for over 14 years, developing her experience in international schools in London, Singapore, Brunei, and now Budapest. She is a member of the Principals Training Centre in London and has been involved with training for inter- national team leaders, curriculum development and assessment with COBIS and the Institute of Education, also in London. Angela firmly believes that Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think, and this philosophy is reflected strongly in the experiences students receive during their days at BBIS.
Managing Director Petra Szalai also has many years of experience in international schools, having attended Budapest’s international schools throughout her student years. These experiences lead her to love the model of international schools, eventually culminating in the realisation of her dream to open a school which fulfils this model yet keeps a small, family atmosphere. With two chil- dren at the school, Petra has more than just a busi- ness interest in ensuring that BBIS achieves and maintains high educational standards throughout the years ahead.
Developing confident, globally aware, motivated and self-disciplined learners.
To sum this all up, it seems appropriate to quote directly from the BBIS website:
“Budapest British International School is com- mitted to developing confident, globally aware, motivated and self-disciplined learners, who can realise their full potential and make a responsible contribution to the world, in a caring, arts oriented teaching and learning environment.”
Go see it for yourselves, they mean what they say. ○
