It feels like entering a different world when on a cold December evening a group of adult persons enters a flat in a children’s home in the countryside of Hungary in which a group of six children and teenagers are already excitingly waiting for them. Two of the adults are dressed as St. Nicholas and Krampus respectively and the reason for coming to the children is to bring them some joy for St. Nicholas’ Day. Shyly one little boy recites a simple poem and after this the group of children sings a Christmas song. Once the last note fads away the adults, who are all members of the All Nations Lions Club in Budapest, are handing over bags to the children with presents for St. Nicholas’ Day. The response is overwhelming: “Look, what I got!” cheers one child and holds a bottle with shampoo up while smiling and radiating the happiness about the fact that somebody thought on them.
Already since more than ten years the members of the All Nations Lions Club pack on the occasion of St. Nicholas’ Day 1,000 bags for 1,000 children in children’s homes, kindergartens, hospitals and other facilities and distribute them. Many of those children live separated from their families due to social challenges or due to a treatment of a disease in a hospital. Handing the bags over to the children means always for the club members making the firsthand experience that there are people in the society that are easily overlooked but who urgently need attention, empathy and hands-on support. Thus these encounters of the Lions club members with these children are not only about providing joy but also an opportunity for checking what else their club could do for supporting those children.
However, the All Nations Lions Club could not handle every year the Saint Nicholas Bags project without the tangible support of sponsors and donators. Therefore the club kindly asks companies, organizations and private persons for support. Especially donations in kind (including suitable promotional gifts) would be welcome but also financial donations are much appreciated. Thebags packed and delivered by the club members themselves contain usually some sweets, small toys, if suitable for children also promotional gifts, books, sanitary articles and clothes.
In return for donations equivalent approximately 50,000 HUF or more the ANLC offers to present the logos of the donators on the online media of the club (website, social media) and to link the logos to the donators’ website.
